60 Mathaus Heilmann Mainz, Germany No 194 c1785 A rare early grand pianoforte in a fielded panelled walnut case raised on four slender square tapered legs; Length 213cm, Width 95cm, Depth of case 24cm, Height 70cm. The sycamore nameboard bearing a large paper label with the inscription Mathaeus Heilmann Hof-Orgel und Instrumenten Macher in Mainz No 194. Compass 5 octaves FF to f3. Current pitch A=435. Two knee levers below the keyboard, which has ebony naturals and bone covered beech accidentals. Single bridge and with a Viennese action. Heilmann worked in Mainz and was appointed court tuner, organist and maker to the Elector and Archbishop of Mainz. Literature The Early Piano by C.F. 61 Conrad Graf No 2505/6 Austria, Vienna circa 1836 A Classical Viennese grand piano in a cherrywood case raised on three turned, tapering baluster legs with lyre pedal supports; Length 242cm, Width 125cm, Depth of case 33cm, Height 70cm. The fascia bearing the inscription CONRAD GRAF Kaiserl: Kön: Hof - Fortepianomacher, WIEN, nachst der Carls-Kirche im Mondschein No 102. Divided bridge with a Viennese action. CC-EE bichord, FF-G4 trichord. Compass 6 - octaves CC - g4. Current pitch A=415. Ivory naturals and stained beech accidentals . Four pedals operating Keyboard Shift, Moderator, Semi-Moderator and Damper Lift. Complete with internal pine dust cover. Graf pianos were favoured and used by Beethoven, Chopin, Clara Schumann, among others. This piano first came to light in Lucca, Italy and virtually all the parts are original. 62 Joseph Kirckman London 1800 A double manual harpsichord in a mahogany, chevron banded and boxwood strung case raised on a trestle stand with four square tapering legs; Length 254cm, Width 100cm. The keyboard surround with satinwood, crossbanding and ebony and boxwood stringing, the nameboard bearing the inscription Josephus Kirckman Londini Fecit 1800, 19 Broad Street, Soho. Ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. Compass FF to f3. Two Pedals, ivory handstops, including Venetian Swell, Harp Stop and Machine. 63 Thomas Tomkison London No 1329 c1821 A grand piano, the case veneered in rosewood inlaid with cut brass of a floral design raised on carved S-scroll legs with shell and foliate decoration; Length 245cm, Width 118cm, Depth of case 29cm, Height 68cm. The keyboard flanked by winged mythical beasts. The fascia bearing the inscription THOMAS TOMKISON, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY. Stamped into the wrest plank T. Tomkison 1329. English Grand action. Compass 6 octaves CC to c4. This piano was made for George IV and located at Brighton Pavilion. A contemporary illustration showing the interior view of the entrance hall in the Brighton Pavilion illustrates this piano in situ. Literature The Early Piano by C.F. The case later covered with scarlet and gilt-tooled leather, raised on painted and gilt decorated turned tapered fluted legs; Width 180cm, Depth 54cm.
