Mathaus Heilmann Mainz, Germany No 194 c1785 A rare early grand pianoforte in a fielded panelled walnut case raised on four slender square tapered legs; Length 213cm, Width 95cm, Depth of case 24cm, Height 70cm. The sycamore nameboard bearing a large paper label with the inscription Mathaeus Heilmann Hof-Orgel und Instrumenten Macher in Mainz No 194. Compass 5 octaves FF to f3. Current pitch A=435. Two knee levers below the keyboard, which has ebony naturals and bone covered beech accidentals. Single bridge and with a Viennese action. Heilmann worked in Mainz and was appointed court tuner, organist and maker to the Elector and Archbishop of Mainz. Literature The Early Piano by C.F. CC-EE bichord, FF-G4 trichord. Compass 6 - octaves CC - g4. Current pitch A=415. Ivory naturals and stained beech accidentals . Four pedals operating Keyboard Shift, Moderator, Semi-Moderator and Damper Lift. Complete with internal pine dust cover. Graf pianos were favoured and used by Beethoven, Chopin, Clara Schumann, among others. This piano first came to light in Lucca, Italy and virtually all the parts are original. The keyboard flanked by winged mythical beasts. The fascia bearing the inscription THOMAS TOMKISON, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY. Stamped into the wrest plank T. Tomkison 1329. English Grand action. Compass 6 octaves CC to c4. This piano was made for George IV and located at Brighton Pavilion.
