An anonymous Clavecin Royal, Germany, circa 1785 The oak case raised on four square tapered legs. The later oak cross-banded lid with an inner painting depicting Glenarm Castle. The plain oak nameboard bearing a later paper label inscribed: Johann Gottlob, Wagner. In Dresden. The five octave keyboard FF–f3 with ebony naturals with arcaded fronts and ivory capped accidentals. Stossmechanik action with under-dampers. At the bass end of the keywell a curved brass lever controlling the dampers and a stop-knob, once probably operating a missing harp-stop. The rosewood inlaid and satinwood cross-banded nameboard bearing a central inscription: Pape, Paris & Londres, and flanked each side with inscriptions detailing 1st prizes won in 1838. An anonymous grand piano now a harpsichord, circa 1785 The case, veneered in carefully chosen mahogany, elaborately cross-banded and inlaid, with rosettes in the corners of the panels. Raised on a trestle stand with four square tapered legs inlaid with fruitwood stringing. The cross-banded keywell veneered with panels of burr walnut and geometric stringing. The five octave keyboard FF/GG–f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. At present set up with three rows of plastic harpsichord jacks, this instrument appears to have been converted from a piano as apparently the instrument had an action accessed from underneath in a manner only used by Crang Hancock. The case has been lengthened whilst in Colt’s ownership. The extant examples of Crang Hancock grand pianos are all relatively short, so it may have been lengthened in the misbelief that it had at some stage been reduced in length. The five octave keyboard FF–f3 with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. English single action with over-dampers. The detachable stand containing a single rank of 8-foot stopped wooden organ pipes. A hand-stop controls the piano’s dampers, and a true una-corda is obtained by shifting the keyboard towards the player.
