Yamaha - December 2022
Due in part to superb construction and constant research, Yamaha have become the leading manufacturer of high quality reasonably priced instruments. This coupled with adept marketing and a dynamic export strategy means that these wonderful pianos are readily available. For a working music teacher or advanced student these make an excellent investment.
In our upcoming sale of the 13th December we are delighted to be able to offer 5 grand and 20 upright examples to include a highly desirable Lot 38 - Yamaha (c2005) A 5ft 3in Model C1 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with a matching Tozer duet stool and Lot 57 Yamaha (c2001)
A Model SU131 traditional upright in a bright ebonised case; together with a matching stool.
A 6ft 3in grand piano in a rosewood case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 2 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS 6FT 3IN AND NOT 5FT 9IN
Casework: Is perfectly acceptable but tired in areas – there are light scratches on quite a few of the top surfaces but nothing serious.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good but please note that the soundboard is very dirty and could do with a clean, as indeed could the entirety of the frame.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory – they are good – there is one repair in the middle which is noticeable but the rest are good.
Hammers and Action: Are acceptable but there is sluggishness in the action, which suggests a certain amount of damp in its previous home and this will need the attentions of a tuner. This is further reinforced because there is a damp chaser fitted in the keyboard area, with a plug exiting at the side of the piano. This has Aliquot patent but it has a standard roller action.
General Notes: This is potentially a nice instrument but needs a little work.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.
Buyers Premium: 24% incl. VAT
More pictures of this lot will be uploaded on Thursday 8 December.
Specific photographs, videos & condition report are available on request.
An upright piano in a modern satin mahogany case.
Condition Report:
LOT 3 – PETROF UPRIGHT
Casework: Is good. There are one or two scratches to the top side of the fall and one or two very small and inconsequential areas of rubbing to the cheek blocks and the odd ding and dent but nothing that will not be improved with a brown felt tip pen. There are one or two impact marks on the pedal board but again nothing to worry about.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are also good and in good condition. The material used for covering this keyboard is modern plastics.
Hammers and Action: Are in very nice condition. This is a super little piano that plays nicely, from a top maker.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 5ft 1in Model KG-1C grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 4 – KAWAI MODEL KG-1C GRAND
Casework: Is in care worn condition. There are scuffs and scrapes all over the main body of the piano, front and back, dings and dents to the legs, wear to the lip of the lid and multi scratches. There is some gilding loss around the badge on the frame. All these things can be repaired but it is quite a job to do it. Nonetheless, it will be a nice piano when done.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good but very dusty. There is a lot of dirt and contamination around the pins and obviously this will need to be dealt with.
Keys and Keyboard: Are modern plastics material and in good condition.
Hammers and Action: The action is a little dusty but the hammers are good, and everything is working as it should.
General Notes: With a little work, this piano could be very nice indeed but do bear in mind that the case will need the attentions of a polyester specialist to make it twinkle again.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A Model CE-7N upright piano in a bright ebonised case.
Condition Report:
LOT 5 – KAWAI MODEL CE-7N UPRIGHT
Casework: Is acceptable but there are areas of damage to leading edges, notably the cheek blocks on both sides and the upright sections of the piano – there is just general damage. There are scratches in various places and it seems that the under felt under the top lid has been attacked by moth.
Frame and Soundboard: Are solid.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good condition – they are covered in a plastic material, although there is some knocking from the central section.
Hammers and Action: The action appears to need major work. There is blocking, sluggishness and general corrosion.
General Notes: This piano needs to be taken into somebody’s workshop in order to be revived, but it is not in good condition by any stretch of the imagination.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

An upright piano in a traditional satin mahogany case; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 6 – KEMBLE UPRIGHT
Casework: Is acceptable but the treble side has some severe scratching - this will need to be dealt with. There is a white ring mark on the fall, on the top surface, and there are one or two scratches about the piano itself but it is a nice piano and in good condition.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – modern plastics material.
Hammers and Action: Are also good.
General Notes: This has the potential to be a very nice instrument but will need a small amount of cosmetic work.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 4ft 6in grand piano in a satin mahogany case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 7 – ZIMMERMANN GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: IS IN A SATIN MAHOGANY CASE
Casework: Is generally good, although there is fading, particularly to the treble end and the top lid.
Frame and Soundboard: Are clean and good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are likewise – good. The covering is a plastics material.
Hammers and Action: Look in generally good condition. The hammers might benefit from a little shaping but really the piano sound generally good and will provide good service as is.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 6ft 3in grand piano in a mahogany and crossbanded case on dual square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 8 – BLÜTHNER GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good condition, although there is significant fade to the bass side and the top lid has a little polish breakdown and again quite significant fade. This will need to be dealt with in order for this piano to reach its full potential visually. There is a piece of veneer missing from the treble cheek block – it is included along with a key, so the piece of veneer is not missing but it has become detached and will need to be re-glued.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. The piano has been re-built to a very high standard. The pins are good and everything is very clean. The quality of work done is very high.
Keys and Keyboard: Are a modern plastics material – they have been replaced and again have been done to a good standard.
Hammers and Action: Are in very good condition. It is my opinion that this is a replacement action – it is badged ‘Herberger and Brooks’.
General Notes: Overall, the work done to this piano is of a very high standard and it needs nothing more than the attentions of a competent polisher.

A Model W118 upright piano in a satin walnut case.
Condition Report:
LOT 9 – SCHIMMEL MODEL W118 UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in generally good condition but there is fade – this is noticeable when the front panel is removed and you can see the original colour on the internal uprights. There are one or two very small areas of mild cloudiness in the polish but these are not really noticeable, so case-wise the piano is in good condition – one or two impact marks in places, one on the cheek block and one on the treble cheek block, but apart from that the case is good.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are also good – the material used is a modern plastic covering.
Hammers and Action: The action, which is a Renner action, is in good order and the hammers look very healthy. This piano plays nicely and sounds powerful.

A 7ft 3½in 85-note Model C grand piano in rosewood case on turned tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 10 – STEINWAY MODEL C GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good order. It has been refinished at some point in an open grain technique. There is no significant damage and the piano looks very good.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good, although the soundboard does have a number of splits – these are having no bearing on the sound but are unsightly.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good order – ivory coverings. There is very faint yellowing but it is uniform.
Hammers and Action: Look in generally good condition. The piano plays very well and has a magnificent bass.

Casework: Is excellent.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.

A 5ft 2in Model SG-155 grand piano in a bright white case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 12 – REID-SOHN GRAND
PLEASE NOTE: IS 5FT 2IN NOT 6FT 3IN AND IS SG-155
Casework: Is in generally good condition – there are one or two smudged dark areas and a little bit of damage to the treble under corner on the front rail. The case itself has faded slightly, or it has darkened. The best way of describing it - the piano would have been an ivory colour in these areas and now it has gone a slightly darker ivory colour. Overall, this is not really noticeable and the piano presents very well.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – a little dirty, the soundboard could do with cleaning. There is a little bit of contamination in the centre of the soundboard under the bass strings. Some of the bass strings are also a little discoloured – this is having no bearing on the sound. There is a little corrosion on the treble strings as well – I am sure that this will clean off easily enough.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – the material used is modern plastic.
Hammers and Action: Are also good – perhaps the hammers are a little squared, or a little well used, but a shaping is certainly in order and will improve things dramatically.
General Notes: The piano plays nicely and has the potential to sound very good.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 5ft grand piano in an oak case on dual turned fluted legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 13 – IBACH GRAND
Casework: This has been sympathetically re-polished and is in very good condition.
Frame and Soundboard: Are also in excellent condition. There is an odd pin in the bass, which looks like an honest repair, but other than that the stringing all looks good and looks to have been renewed in the last 30-40 years and to a good standard.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good condition – ivory – one or two keytops have been off but have been competently glued back on.
Hammers and Action: Are in good condition and the piano plays nicely.
General Notes: This instrument is a very nice buy for somebody.

Casework: Is in excellent condition.
Frame and Soundboard: Are also in excellent condition.
Keys and Keyboard: Are very good – material used is plastic.
Hammers and Action: Are very clean.
General Notes: This piano seems to have had very little use – it is in very good order and will make a very nice long-term instrument for an advancing player.

A 6ft 11in Model B grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with an adjustable stool. This piano has been fully restored in the past.
Condition Report:
LOT 15 – STEINWAY MODEL B GRAND
Casework: Is good, if a little grubby and could do with a clean. There are one or two surface scratches on the top but these are very light and easy to buff out.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. There is evidence of shim work or indeed at least soundboard work. Of note is the Steinway & Sons Piano Manufacturers to Her Majesty The Queen of England, Their Royal Highnesses The Price of Wales and The Princess of Wales, which presumably was a patriotic statement after the Great War.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – ivory. There is a little yellowing but it is very acceptable.
Hammers and Action: Are good. The action looks as if it has had major work, if not actually a complete replacement – the action is very clean.
General Notes: This piano, apart from a good general buff and clean, is ready to go.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

Casework: Is good. There is a very small amount of fading to the front edges but nothing of significance.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – a modern plastics material has been used.
Hammers and Action: Are good and very clean. This piano really doesn’t appear to have had a great deal of use in it’s relatively short life.

A 5ft 9in grand piano in a bright mahogany case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 17 – WEINBACH BY PETROF GRAND
Casework: Is in good condition but like all polyester, has surface scratching, which is particularly noticeable under certain lights on the top surfaces. There are also one or two very minor impact marks, particularly at the bass end (nothing to worry about), where there is a little fade. There is of course case fade to the top lid but it is not significant.
Frame and Soundboard: Are in very good order and very clean. The soundboard could do with the lightest attention cleaning-wise at the treble end but apart from that it is in excellent condition.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in very good order – the covering is modern plastic material.
Hammers and Action: Are also in very good order. This piano plays very nicely and sounds really good.

A Model K upright piano in a mahogany case; together with a duet stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 18 – STEINWAY MODEL K UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in acceptable condition. There are one or two areas of rubbing and one or two very minor impact marks, but nothing serious.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – a little dirty. This piano could do with a clean and a little attention in this area, nothing more I suspect than cosmetic.
Keys and Keyboard: Are ivory – they are in good condition, although one or two have been off and there appears to be a little discolouration.
Hammers and Action: Are all working. There have been some localised repairs, but now might be a time for more work. Everything is working well and the piano sounds remarkably nice.

A 6ft 1in Model KG3C grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with a matching stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 19 – KAWAI MODEL KG3C GRAND
Casework: Is in generally very good condition. There are one or two of the scratches associated with these high gloss polyester finishes but these will buff out easily. There is one small area of damage that I can detect at the foot of the lid prop on the rim of the piano but again this is inconsequential. The case is in generally very good condition and needs nothing more than a little attention in that area and buffing.
Frame and Soundboard: And stringing, are all good. The treble strings have a little corrosion and I suspect this will clean off easily.
Keys and Keyboard: Is in very good condition - it is a modern plastics key covering that has been used.
Hammers and Action: The action is also in good condition - although the piano has been used, the hammers are in good shape and this piano sounds nice and plays very well.

A 5ft 1in Model S grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 20 – STEINWAY MODEL S GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good order but like all polyester, the top lid certainly has a haze of scratches – this is fairly straightforward to buff. There is also an easily buffable scratch to the front of the music rest and the area around the top lock rail has got a little bit of polyester movement. There is also polyester movement at the bass end to the side of the piano and another little area at treble cheek block. There is a little ‘ding’ at the top of the music rest.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – the piano could do with a little clean but other than that everything is in very sound condition.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in very good order – they are a replacement plastic material.
Hammers and Action: Are very good. This piano plays nicely and sounds beautiful.

A 6ft 1in Model RX3 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 22 – KAWAI MODEL RX3 GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good condition. This is the model that has the ‘Kawai’ emblem on the treble side. There are one or two scratches and one on the fall, a little damage to the cheek block at the treble end and for some reason the treble leg has a little damage to the edges and looks in less good condition than the other legs. Other than that, the piano has the surface scratching we associate with this type of finish and will be fairly easy to repair.
Frame and Soundboard: Are very good.
Keys and Keyboard: Is good – it is a modern plastics material covering.
Hammers and Action: Are in good order also. The hammers could perhaps do with a shape.
General Notes: Apart from various case repairs, which are entirely optional, this is a nice piano and it has a powerful sound.

An upright piano in a traditional bright mahogany case.
Condition Report:
LOT 1 – MONINGTON AND WESTON UPRIGHT
Casework: Is good but there is some fading, quite noticeably to the front and indeed when you remove the front panel you can see the extent of the fading.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – covered with a modern plastics material.
Hammers and Action: Are good. The piano has had a moth but this only seems to have affected the area under the nameboard, so the nameboard felt will need to be replaced.
