A Model CE-7N upright piano in a bright ebonised case.
Condition Report:
LOT 5 – KAWAI MODEL CE-7N UPRIGHT
Casework: Is acceptable but there are areas of damage to leading edges, notably the cheek blocks on both sides and the upright sections of the piano – there is just general damage. There are scratches in various places and it seems that the under felt under the top lid has been attacked by moth.
Frame and Soundboard: Are solid.
Keys and Keyboard: Are in good condition – they are covered in a plastic material, although there is some knocking from the central section.
Hammers and Action: The action appears to need major work. There is blocking, sluggishness and general corrosion.
General Notes: This piano needs to be taken into somebody’s workshop in order to be revived, but it is not in good condition by any stretch of the imagination.
This report is based on a cursory examination and is our opinion only. It does not constitute a guarantee and potential buyers should satisfy themselves about the lot before bidding.

A 6ft 1in Model KG3C grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs; together with a matching stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 19 – KAWAI MODEL KG3C GRAND
Casework: Is in generally very good condition. There are one or two of the scratches associated with these high gloss polyester finishes but these will buff out easily. There is one small area of damage that I can detect at the foot of the lid prop on the rim of the piano but again this is inconsequential. The case is in generally very good condition and needs nothing more than a little attention in that area and buffing.
Frame and Soundboard: And stringing, are all good. The treble strings have a little corrosion and I suspect this will clean off easily.
Keys and Keyboard: Is in very good condition - it is a modern plastics key covering that has been used.
Hammers and Action: The action is also in good condition - although the piano has been used, the hammers are in good shape and this piano sounds nice and plays very well.

A 6ft 1in Model RX3 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 22 – KAWAI MODEL RX3 GRAND
Casework: Is in generally good condition. This is the model that has the ‘Kawai’ emblem on the treble side. There are one or two scratches and one on the fall, a little damage to the cheek block at the treble end and for some reason the treble leg has a little damage to the edges and looks in less good condition than the other legs. Other than that, the piano has the surface scratching we associate with this type of finish and will be fairly easy to repair.
Frame and Soundboard: Are very good.
Keys and Keyboard: Is good – it is a modern plastics material covering.
Hammers and Action: Are in good order also. The hammers could perhaps do with a shape.
General Notes: Apart from various case repairs, which are entirely optional, this is a nice piano and it has a powerful sound.

A Model CE-7N upright piano in a modern bright white case.
Condition Report:
LOT 29 – KAWAI MODEL CE-7N UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in very good condition. It could just do with nothing more than a clean.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are also good. A modern plastics covering is what has been used.
Hammers and Action: Are good.
General Notes: This is an attractive piano and it sounds very nice.

A 5ft 10in Model RX2 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 42 – KAWAI MODEL RX2 GRAND
Casework: Is generally good but there are one or two small areas of damage, most notably at the top of the leg base at the bass end of the piano, so at the top of the leg mounting at the side of the piano. This is not obviously noticeable from the front. There are one or two other dings and dents, little bits on legs, that can be felt with a finger, but nothing serious. There are the kind of surface scratches that we are accustomed to with polyester pianos, particularly noticeable on the rear of the top lid, but generally the piano’s case is in good order but a little attention and a bit of buffing will work wonders.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – the material used for the covering is a modern plastic.
Hammers and Action: Are good.
General Notes: This piano plays nicely and needs very little.

A 5ft 5in Model RX1 grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 46 – KAWAI MODEL RX1 GRAND
Casework: Is generally in good condition. If you want a metaphor or a golfing term, it is like a pitching wedge – it is good at 25 feet. As you get closer you can see that there are quite a number of scratches, particularly on the top lid, one or two small areas of damage on the front edges and there are some noticeable scratches around the rear side of the piano too, nothing that can’t be dealt with and nothing that’s too deep.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good – the frame is very clean and the soundboard is good. There are a number of faint striations but these are nothing more than timber characteristics.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – there is a little sideways play in the keyboard. The keyboard itself is I presume covered in an ivory imitation, but it is not ivory, it is a modern plastic and it has slightly yellowed.
Hammers and Action: There is a little wear in the action. This piano has had a fairly exuberant life but obviously has many decades ahead of it and will just need a little attention from a competent tuner.

A 114cm Model K200 upright piano in a bright ebonised case, fitted with a silent system (not tested); together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 54 – KAWAI MODEL K200 UPRIGHT
Casework: Is in generally good order – there are no impact marks but the top has got a number of easily buffable very light scratches, the kind that can only be seen in certain lights, so really you will not be aware of this if you don’t look too closely.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – covered with a modern plastic material.
Hammers and Action: Are good.
General Notes: This piano is fitted with a silent system, which is contemporary with the piano, so fitted in the factory. We are short of the 15 volt cable, so as far as we are aware, this is a working system but it is as yet untested and so obviously you should bear this in mind. We will do our best to get this going but we can make no promises – we are in need of a 15 volt transformer. This is a lovely piano, with the potentially working silent system fitted to it, but whatever happens it plays nicely and sounds good.

A 124cm Model KU1 upright piano in a bright ebonised case; together with a stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 84 – KAWAI UPRIGHT
PLEASE NOTE: THE PIANO IS c1969.
Casework: Is generally acceptable, although there are various areas of polish fade. There are a few impact marks, particularly to the cheek blocks and on the front edge, and the piano case could do with a revive.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good. There is a single dead bass string – the first E flat, but apart from that, the piano is bright and cheerful. Please note: there is a replacement pedal – the pedal that controls the half blow has been replaced with an antique pedal and a rather eccentric wire pull arrangement has replaced what would normally be trap work – this may be factory original. Either way, the wire is currently resting against some of the bass strings and making them vibrate. This is a problem which will need to be remedied or explored.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – a little dirty – covered in a plastic material.
Hammers and Action: Are good and everything is working as it should. The bass hammers are slightly different in pattern to the treble – this may well be factory finish, it may well be that hammers have been replaced at some point, but either way the work has been done to a good standard.
General Notes: This piano has faults but it has the potential to be a nice instrument from a very good maker and it has a bright and cheerful sound.

A 112cm Model K-18EA upright piano in a traditional bright mahogany case; together with a matching stool.
Condition Report:
LOT 123 – KAWAI UPRIGHT
PLEASE NOTE: IS 112CM NOT 108CM AND IS A MODEL TYPE K-18EA
Casework: Is in good condition but please note there is an area of damage to the left-hand cheek block where veneer has been glued back on and this will need attention, although doesn’t show up too badly.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good.
Keys and Keyboard: Are good – modern plastics material.
Hammers and Action: Are good.
General Notes: This is a nice sounding piano and will provide many years of faithful service.

What You Should Know About Kawai
The Kawai brand originally dates back to its founder Koichi Kawai, born in 1886. A later member of the Kawai family left the firm of Nippon Gakki (later known as Yamaha) to start his own piano company. In 1980 the Ryuyo Grand Piano factory opened and Kawai has steadily become one of the world’s leading brands, with the upmarket Shigeru models being much sought after.

A 5ft 1in Model KG-1C grand piano in a bright ebonised case on square tapered legs.
Condition Report:
LOT 4 – KAWAI MODEL KG-1C GRAND
Casework: Is in care worn condition. There are scuffs and scrapes all over the main body of the piano, front and back, dings and dents to the legs, wear to the lip of the lid and multi scratches. There is some gilding loss around the badge on the frame. All these things can be repaired but it is quite a job to do it. Nonetheless, it will be a nice piano when done.
Frame and Soundboard: Are good but very dusty. There is a lot of dirt and contamination around the pins and obviously this will need to be dealt with.
Keys and Keyboard: Are modern plastics material and in good condition.
Hammers and Action: The action is a little dusty but the hammers are good, and everything is working as it should.
General Notes: With a little work, this piano could be very nice indeed but do bear in mind that the case will need the attentions of a polyester specialist to make it twinkle again.
